What You Can Expect During a Root Canal Procedure

Are you getting ready for a root canal therapy in Winter Park? This is a standard procedure that works to rid your tooth of the infected or inflamed tissue from inside it. If you want to know what happens during the process, read on.

What Happens During a Root Canal Procedure?

The Dentist Uses a Local Anesthetic

Most people wrongfully assume that root canal treatments are extremely painful. However, the truth is that they’re already experiencing severe pain even before their dental appointment. To make sure that you won’t get to feel any pain or discomfort throughout the procedure, your dentist will administer a local anesthetic to the affected area before he begins.

A Dental Dam Will Be Placed Over Your Mouth

The dental dam will allow the dentist to isolate the tooth that needs the treatment. This works to prevent any form of debris from getting inside your mouth.

The Dentist Does the Drilling

Once the dental dam is in place, your dentist will start to get rid of the tooth decay by drilling it away until the inside of the tooth is exposed.

The Inside of the Tooth is Removed

The central part of your tooth is where the pulp chamber is. This chamber houses your tooth’s nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. Right after the dentist removes this part, special files are used to scrub the inside parts of your tooth’s roots.

The Inside of the Tooth Gets Disinfected and Filled Up

Once the infected areas are removed and the insides thoroughly scrubbed, the dentist disinfects it and fills it up with a natural latex called gutta-percha before using a harder composite to fill your tooth’s crown portion.
